Ricki’s Partners with Plastic Bank to Help Combat Plastic Pollution

The Canadian women’s fashion company believes in being fashionable and responsible, and by partnering with Vancouver’s Plastic Bank, they believe that they can fight ocean plastics and poverty at the same time.

Vancouver, BC- Nov. 9th, 2020- After launching their first recycled polyester product in 2019, Ricki’s has focused heavily on their corporate footprint, and today, has announced their partnership with the Plastic Bank in China in order to promote closed-loop recycling.

It’s no question that plastic pollution is at an all time high, and according to oceanconservancy.org, “every year, 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean on top of the estimated 150 million metric tons that currently circulate our marine environments.” Ocean Conservancy also states that only 5 countries account for 55 percent of plastic pollution into the ocean: Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and China.

The global plastic pollution crisis has hit China harder than any other country in the world, and Ricki’s wants to do their part. Since much of their products are manufactured in China, the company found it fitting to partner with Plastic Bank to build adequate infrastructure in the country to encourage the recycling of plastics that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean or local ecosystem.

The funding for this infrastructure will come from Ricki’s revenue and donations from their generous customers. A percentage of every purchase made at Ricki’s, either in store or online, that contains a garment made from Social Plastic® recycled polyester will go towards collection and recycling infrastructure in China.

Along with this, Ricki’s has made a pledge to make 100 percent of the company’s plastic recyclable by 2025. This includes plastic packaging when shipping to stores and to customers.

Beyond building infrastructure, this partnership will also give employment to the less fortunate population in China. The program will encourage plastic collectors in areas around the recycling depot to turn in the polluted plastic in exchange for digital currency, which can be exchanged for necessary goods.

“At Ricki’s, we understand the implications of manufacturing out of China, and know that to be a better company, we must combat the pollution problem that China is having,” says Deanna Traa, Ricki’s President. “We are dedicated to being a sustainable and environmentally conscious company, and are so excited to be moving forward with the Plastic Bank.”
